Osun State on High Alert as Cholera Outbreak Hits Lagos

The Osun State Government has sounded a warning to its citizens following a cholera outbreak in neighboring Lagos State, where five people have died and 60 others hospitalized.

According to the Honorable Commissioner for Health, Barr. Jola Akintola, the state government has activated its Public Health Rapid Response Team (PHRRT) and Public Health Emergency Management Committee (PHEMC) to ensure adequate surveillance activities and guarantee the health of its citizens.

While Osun State has yet to record a confirmed case of cholera, the government has heightened surveillance and response measures statewide, particularly as the festive period approaches.

Citizens traveling to and from Lagos and other neighboring states are urged to exercise caution and take necessary precautions to prevent the spread of cholera. The government has also put in place measures to educate residents on cholera preventive measures, including public awareness campaigns, mobilization of local leaders and traditional rulers, and partnerships with organizations like the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, and the Nigeria Red Cross Society.

Health facilities in the state have been equipped to manage suspected cases, and citizens are advised to report any symptoms of cholera, such as severe watery diarrhea, vomiting, rapid dehydration, muscle cramps, fever, and collapse, to the nearest health facility or call the provided hotlines.

The government's proactive measures aim to ensure a safe and healthy festive period for all citizens. By working together, Osun State can prevent the spread of cholera and maintain a healthy and safe environment for all.
