2023: Tinubu, Amaechi, Others In Trouble As Top APC Chieftains Push For Northern Presidency

The All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders have begun campaigning for the party’s presidential ticket to be assigned to the north.

Anaedoonline.ng has gathered that the plan to elect the party’s flag bearer from the North has progressed significantly following a series of meetings held by supporters of Northern candidacy.

The move for a Northern presidential campaign has reportedly caused concern among the big Southern presidential candidates.

Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the APC National Leader; Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State, Senator Rochas Okorocha, and former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi are among the Southern contenders.

According to the article, certain northern elders, governors, and members of the National Working Committee are pushing the agenda (NWC) of the party and lawmakers.

Senate President Ahmad Lawan, Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, Jigawa State Governor, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, and former Zamfara State Governor, Sen. Ahmed Yarima, all joined the presidential contest, according to the publication.

One of the advocates of the Northern candidacy, an APC chieftain who did not want to be identified, told Daily Trust that parties exist to win elections, not to massage people’s egos.

With indications from the PDP that a strong candidate from the North would likely be selected for the party’s presidential ticket, he believes the APC’s only option is to choose a northerner.

He did say, though, that they would put pressure on Badaru and Yerima to leave.

Another source said the promoters were behind the calls for the selection of the party’s candidate through consensus.

He said they would involve the president to prevail on all other aspirants to key into the arrangement in the interest of the party.

“We cannot go for direct primaries because of the number of the aspirants. Our best bet is consensus,” he said.
