Being a legal practitioner either from the Bench or at the Bar connotes and denotes possessing near faultless communication finesse. Communication skills are receptive and expressive which are further broken down to listening, reading, speaking and writing abilities; all controlled by thinking as the mitochondrion of communication.
Ajibola Basiru; Senator, lawyer, author and public speaker combines all. He used his legal education as a platform and springboard to launch himself into the Nigerian Senate. After a stint as the chairman of the Senate Committee on Diaspora and Non Governmental Organisations, the leadership of the Senate saw the communication prowess in him .The Senate at all times and the World over needs an image maker. A Spokesperson of that hierarchy of Government should know what to say, how to say, when to say, why to say and where to say what. This is what defines news.
The Senate gave the delicate job to Surajudeen Ajibola Basiru, PhD. He makes the news. He himself a newsmaker. Ajibola Basiru is the link between the wig and the pen. Two years on, Ajibola Basiru has not faltered in that huge responsibility. He is always in his best helmet. He knows his onions. He speaks not to impress but to express and eventually, listeners find him impressive.
To appreciate Ajibola Basiru's performance as the Senate's Spokesperson, the Senate's Press Corp honoured him in its annual award ceremony with The Parliamentary Image Defender Award in June 2021.
The Senate Press Corp had this to say about him," Little wonder that the Senate and by extension the 9th Assembly has no image crisis in whatever form now, as those who take delight in igniting such have gone all underground for of not being exposed as mischief makers by ever ready Senator Basiru".
Similarly in November 2021, the Osun State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ honoured Senator Ajibola Basiru as the Lawmaker of the Year. He was honoured for his contributions to the course of the Chapel. He delivered papers at the 2019,2020 and 2021 NUJ Week of Osun Council, he sponsored a day training in Development Reportage for members of the National Association of Women Journalists, Osun State Council and bankrolled similar training for B zone NAWOJ all in the year 2021.
A month does not pass by without the Senate Spokesperson featuring in radio and television programmes to keep the public abreast of happenings in the National Assembly and the nation as a whole as it affects lawmaking and lawmakers. Ajibola Basiru is not "a give me some time speaker". Pick him up anywhere on any issue of national interest, he becomes a wordsmith.
In February 2020, Senator Ajibola Basiru declared open the NUJ Week of Kwara State Chspel and delivered the leading paper. The Osogbo and Ikirun Branches of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA recognised and honoured SRJ, not only because he is one of them but because he has continued to be a worthy ambassador of the legal profession.
All these are a pointer to the fact that Senator Dr Ajibola Basiru is a link between the wig and the pen. He has shown that representation at that height of governance is not a job meant for " kinni won nse ni be" type of politicians.
