FRSC OSUN CAUTIONS ON EXCESSIVE SPEED TO REDUCE ROAD TRAFFIC CRASHES
The Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC Osun State Command has advised the motoring public on the need to avoid excessive speed in order to reduce the rate of Road Traffic Crash in the State.
The UN Global Road Safety week is celebrated between 17 and 23 May annually. The campaign calls for 30km/h speed limits to be used in cities, town and villages.
She added that according to World Health Organization WHO, most of the deaths and severe injuries that occured can be attributed to excessive speeding.
Pointed out that some of the motoring public drive above speed limit which brings about crashes, she said that the severity of crash reduces when speeds are under control.
The Corps Commander added that during holidays when people stay at home, vehicular movement reduces but crash does not, because of the high speed at which motorists drive.
She therefore said that there is urgent need for attitudinal change and discipline in order to create safe motoring environment in the society, Hence driving at low speed should be the watchword at all times.
Ibrahim reiterated that just as the World Health Organisation is calling for low speed limit, the Sector Command has enjoined the general public to go on speed as low as 30km/h in within town and village roads in the state of Osun.
She also enjoined commercial and private drivers to be mindful of all categories of road users, she emphasized that women drivers should be road safety advocates to be part of the effort at ensuring zero death on our roads, further added that this call becomes necessary in order to achieve the target of the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021 to 2023.
