It is worthwhile for the Inspector-General of Police to have the knowledge of the fact that his men are flagrantly breaching their statutory duties to the public with impunity.
If not so, how does one explain the killing of an innocent Nigerian by the same police who are constitutionally saddled with the security of lives and property of the citizenry?
That the police is always in the news for negative reasons nationwide is no longer a novelty as there is hardly a day that one won't hear of the wanton negligence of the police resulting in the avoidable death of innocent Nigerians either by accidental shooting, torturing of suspects or killing by way of hit-and-run drivers.
Such was the plight of another latest victim of the police negligence to duty when 49-year-old Mr Najeem Omokanye was hurriedly dispatched to the great beyond few hours to the beginning of the New Year in Osogbo.
Omokanye who was one of the domestic staff of Prince Gboyega Famodun, the state Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), was, according to eye witnesses account, knocked down by SARS ehicle chasing some suspected 'Yahoo boys' at Olonkoro area of Osogbo on December 29, 2019 around 2:30 pm.
It was garhered that the victim who was living at 17, Oke-Oniti area of Osogbo, at the back of Saint Michael Primary School, Osogbo, was dragged for some distance by the SARS' vehicle that knocked him down on his motorcycle.
All efforts by the good Samaritans to make the police of SARS extraction attend to the victim proved abortive as the vehicle was said to have sped off with a speed of lightening, a situation that qualified the melee as that of a hit-and-run by the police.
The victim who hailed from Ifon-Osun in Osun State was rushed to the LAUTECH Hospital in Osogbo where he later regained consciousness but gave up the gost shortly after spending few hours in the hospital.
While he was still conscious in the hospital, he was intuitively cursing the reckless police driver that suddenly cut his life short without any sympathy or empathy.
Ajimo, the wife of the deceased who has two children to cater for, was a pitiable sight as she was yet to believe that her husband was no more at the time of filing this report.
Commenting on the incident, Famodun said he has lost an absolutely loyal, reliable, trustworthy and hardworking staff whose replacement would be difficult to fill.
In Famodun's words: "This is tragic. I lost a loyal and hardworking staff in Najeem. I can't believe it that I won't see him again.
"Through his loyalty, he had warmed his way into my family. It was difficult for people to know that Najeem wasn't my blood relation as he had unfettered access into my house.
"The Inspector-General of Police should unravel the circumstances surrounding the killing of Najeem with a view to bringing to book those who were responsible for the dastardly act", he said.
The state party chairman promised to aid the family of the departed as that would be the only way the deceased could be rewarded.
Some of Najeem's playmates and co-staff in Famodun's compound were sighted discussing the death of one of them in hush tones wearing sad faces intermittently, calling the name of the deceased.
It was learnt that the remains of the deceased had since being interred by his family.
