EKITI INDIGENT STUDENT TOPS HER CLASS

Dr. Omolola Ibukunola Amira, 23, from Erinmope Ekiti in Moba Local Govt Area was the best graduating student in the 2018 Medical & Dental Induction ceremony of the College of Medicine of the University of Lagos on Monday, December 9, 2019 at the New Great Hall, Idi Araba, Lagos. The ceremony was attended by the Senior Special Assistant to Ekiti State governor on Diaspora Affairs Mr Femi Odere.

In a chat with Dr Amira and other graduating students after the ceremony, SSA (Diaspora Affairs) to the governor congratulated the students on behalf of Gov Fayemi and said the governor was very proud of Dr Amira for making Ekiti state and its people proud by her record- breaking academic accomplishments.

Dr Amira became the best student in Obstetrics & Gynaecology, after having three (3) Distinctions out of four (4) of the courses that graduated her in that field. She won all the prizes in Oby/Gyne as the best student namely in Dr (Mrs) Awoliyi prize, Prof & Mrs Oladele Akinla prize, Mrs Grace Bisola Ogunwo-Osinowo prize and Emeritus Prof Giwa-Osagie prize.

In his remarks, the president of Ekiti State Medical Students Association at LUTH, Tolulope Agbelusi, expressed delight and said that it has never happened in the 15-year history of the association to have a representative of government from his state to grace any of their occasions despite their performing wonderful academic feats every year. Agbelusi said that the attendance of the governor's aide to the induction would be a boost to their morale. The association president said this indicates that their govt truly cares about its indigent students.

When asked why she decided to be a medical doctor, Dr Amira said her mother is a doctor. "I have always wanted to be a doctor," she added. The father of another graduating student, Prof Aderiye, on learning that a governor's aide was at the event at the behest of Gov Fayemi, said it was a "radical departure " from what the state government used to be known for. Prof Aderiye expressed satisfaction in Gov Fayemi's transformation of the state. Asked if she would consider working at Ekiti state Teaching Hospital after her housemanship, Dr. Amira said she will if the opportunity presents itself.
